Winter can be one of the busiest times of year for your gas appliances. Whether they've been keeping your home warm, providing endless hot showers or helping you cook hearty whānau meals, they've likely been working hard over the past few months. 

As the days start to get a little longer, spring is the perfect time to give your gas appliances a bit of attention. A few simple maintenance tasks can help keep them performing well and may even help extend their lifespan. 

Here’s where to start. 

Give your gas heating a clean 

If you've been using your gas heater regularly throughout winter, now's a great time to give it some attention. 

Once the appliance has completely cooled, wipe down the exterior with a soft cloth and carefully vacuum around any air vents using a brush attachment. If you have a gas fireplace, check for dust around the glass and surrounding surfaces too.

Avoid using harsh cleaning products or attempting to clean internal components yourself. 

Clean your cooktop and rangehood 

Your kitchen has probably seen plenty of action over winter too. 

Give your gas cooktop a thorough clean, paying attention to burner caps and trivets. Built-up grease and food residue can affect how evenly your burners operate. 

While you're there, don't forget your rangehood. Cleaning or replacing the filter helps it remove cooking steam and odours more effectively. 

Check your hot water system 

Your gas water system works year-round, but winter is often when it gets the biggest workout. 

Take a quick look around the unit for anything unusual, such as signs of corrosion, water leaks or damage. If everything looks to be in good condition, that's great. If something doesn't seem right, it's worth having it checked by a registered gasfitter.

Test your smoke alarms 

Spring is a great reminder to test your smoke alarms and replace the batteries if needed.
