What does an award-winning kitchen look like?

The Gas Hub was a proud sponsor at the recent Registered Master Builders House of the Year Central North Island & East Coast/Hawke’s Bay Region 2023 for the ‘The Gas Hub Kitchen Excellence Award’. Our award-winner, Gareth Collins from Gareth Collins Building, shares his opinion on what makes this kitchen a winner.

With over 30 years of annual awards, the House of the Year awards are a marked and celebrate the craftsmanship of the Master Builders, recognising both new builds and renovated homes throughout the country.

The 2023 The Gas Hub Kitchen Excellence Award winner was a new home built by Gareth Collins Building; a family-run business based in Taranaki. Captivating the judges, this beautiful home on a coastal farm estate in New Plymouth won five other awards at the event, including the Supreme House of the Year Over $1 million award for the Central North Island & East Coast/Hawke’s Bay region.

Gareth Collins shares what he loved most about this property’s stunning kitchen.

What makes a good kitchen?

With over 26 years of experience in the building industry, Gareth says a good kitchen needs the right functionality and social aspects found within it. It must be easy for the owner to use, keep clean, and entertain guests. The flow of the kitchen is important, ideally allowing you to engage with your guests while cooking.

The use of gas

The use of gas was essential for the owners and due to the remote location of this property, they used LPG bottled gas. Particularly used in the kitchen, the cooktop was unique, not being a standard cut-out but instead was built into the kitchen top, a design Gareth said he had never seen before.

The use of gas is popular in the build and renovation projects Gareth has been a part of.

“We try to encourage gas because it’s efficient; more efficient than electricity from what we’ve found.”

The selling points: It’s social aspect, views, functionality, and design features

When asked what he believes was the selling point for this winning kitchen, Gareth said the social aspect. The stunning views are incorporated into all the living areas. Having been hosted at the winning home once completed, he said the large group could all engage easily with each other, and the kitchen's functionality kept everything tidy.

The folded steel within the kitchen was a highlight for Gareth. The kitchen construction was not your normal run-of-the-mill, he explains. The island bench was timber, but the rest was metal, a design Gareth hadn’t seen in over his 26 years of building.

Not to mention the flow to the outdoor kitchen, enhancing the luxury feel of the kitchen and includes a wood-fired pizza oven, inbuilt gas BBQ and outdoor fireplace.

A team effort

Winning The Gas Hub Kitchen Excellence award was a team effort. Gareth expressed he was extremely proud of the sub-trader and their team, right down to the architect and designers.

Congratulations to the award-winning home! The Gas Hub is delighted to support Master Builders and the incredible kitchens being built in stunning homes across the country. Gas is a key part of award-winning builds and kitchens around the country. With gas flowing well into the future you’ll be able to enjoy cooking with it for years to come.
