Connect to natural gas

Connecting to natural gas is easy with The Gas Hub.

Choosing gas energy for your home offers you endless hot showers, cosy heat and the results of a professional chef in the kitchen. If your home is within 40 metres of our gas network, you may be able to get connected for free to natural gas and enjoy a gas-energised home.

It’s simple and below is all you need to know to get connected with us.

When and how do I connect to gas?

Use our handy gas address checker to see if you can get connected to gas and if you’re within 40 metres of our network you may be able to connect for free.

Once you’ve done that, if you’re within range for a free connection, your home is easily accessible and you want to install gas hot water or heating (or both!), you can get started with your gas connection application.

Fill in a few details at the link above and our team will be in touch to complete your application and submit it for approval.

How long will it take?

You can expect your connection to be set up and ready in approximately eight weeks. This is dependent on a few things:

  1. Firstly, you accept our quote (often free of charge) and terms using the link we email you.
  2. You’re accepted as a customer by your nominated energy retailer.
  3. Acquire Council consent (if required).
  4. Contractor availability for installation (due to demand, weather and other gas maintenance work on the network).

Once your connection is completed, your gasfitter will be able to install your new gas appliances.

Be assured, that our customer team will talk to you about timeframes as part of your application and let you know of any delays that they can see may be probable in your area.

Do I need to be at home when The Gas Hub connects me?

Unless we can’t access your property (think gates, dogs etc), you won’t be needed at home during connection. Of course, you’re more than welcome to be there too.

What is an energy retailer?

An energy retailer is a company that supplies and bills you for your natural gas usage each month.

During the connection process, we’ll send your application to the energy retailer of your choice, and they will contact you to open your gas account.

There are a variety of energy retailers to choose from, so we recommend looking around for the best offer.

Find local energy retailers on our website and check Consumer’s Powerswitch website to see the best deals for you and your home.

What is a gasfitter, and why do I need one?

A gasfitter is a licensed and/or certified tradesperson who will install your gas appliances and associated pipework in and around your home. Any work to install or service your gas appliances will be done by a gasfitter, and any new installations or alterations need to be certified as compliant by them.

Find local gas fitters.

What do I need to do before connection day?

  • All you need to do is confirm your property is accessible and ready to go.
  • Move anything blocking access to where your meter will be installed.
  • Keep an eye on any escapees (i.e. furry family members).
  • If installation is on a newly built home, check the cladding and painting is complete.

Ultimately, just be prepared to provide seamless access for our team to complete your installation!

What happens after The Gas Hub connects my gas meter?

Once your gas meter has been installed contact your chosen gasfitter to come and connect the gas meter to your home and appliances. Please note our free connection doesn’t cover these gasfitter costs.

Future of gas

Contrary to fears that gas won’t be available in a few years, Kiwi gas users can be confident that the gas they turn on isn’t being turned off and will continue to flow well into the future. While we look to transition Aotearoa from natural gas to renewable gas, natural gas will still flow.
Currently renewable, low and zero carbon gases are being investigated and trialled in New Zealand and are being successfully used overseas. If you like today’s gas, you’ll love the gas of tomorrow.

Did you know 90% of Powerco’s gas network (and most new subdivisions) are ready to distribute these zero-carbon gas energies already? Most gas appliances are already able to run on a blend of natural gas and renewable hydrogen gas (up to 20%) or biogas.

Are you ready to connect to gas?

Ready to connect? Here is all you need to start the application and make it as quick and easy as possible:

  1. Speak to a local gas fitter to get a quote and discuss what works for you
  2. Select a retailer
  3. Take photos of your suitable meter position.
(Your meter can be placed anywhere along the front of your house or up to 3 meters down the left or right-hand side of the house or garage. Keep away from any ventilation ie: open windows or ignitions eg: fibre box, heat pump, electricity meter etc.)
  4. Once your application has been submitted we look at getting you connected within 4-6 weeks. Lead times for different regions vary. For the most up-to-date timeframes, give us a call.
