Marking Matariki at home

Matariki marks the Māori New Year, a time of remembrance, celebration, and renewal. It’s a chance to come together with whānau, share stories, honour the year that’s been and plan for the future. And like so many special moments in life, food is at the heart of it.

Bringing people together over kai

Whether it’s a full hāngī or a pot of something nourishing on the gas cooktop, cooking and sharing food is a beautiful way to celebrate Matariki at home.

While the kōrero and laughter are flowing, fry up some paraoa parai (fried bread) on the gas hob, filling the house with that unmistakable, comforting smell, or let a Matariki boil-up gently bubble away in the background. Whatever kai you’re sharing, it’s these moments of connection that truly capture the spirit of Matariki.

Need some inspiration? We love these modern takes on traditional dishes from The Hāngi Master, including taro and watercress fritters, mussel toroi, and a hearty boil-up with dough boys (motumotu).

Celebrate Matariki at home

Matariki is often welcomed in the early hours, before the sun rises, as the stars peak into view.

Whether you're heading out to a dawn gathering or simply stepping into the backyard with your whānau, there’s something special about marking the moment together., Afterwards, returning to a warm, welcoming whare adds to the sense of comfort and connection.. Matariki your way

No two Matariki celebrations look the same. Some might bring the whole whānau together, others a quiet evening at home. However you mark the moment, it’s a time to connect with people, with place, and with the past and future.

Warm up, gather close and take a moment to welcome the Māori New Year in a way that feels right for you and your whānau.
